WRITING REVOLUTIONS: LITERATURES OF REVOLUTION IN PHILADELPHIA AND CUBA

Writing Revolutions is a course for students with all majors and interests. It pairs two historic cities that are sites of revolution–Philadelphia and Havana—and explores how people, movements, governments, and cultures move toward freedom. We explore theories of oppression, liberty, resistance, and rebellion generally and in history and literature. We then study two historic time periods: 1) the American Revolution of 1776 compared and contrasted with the Cuban overthrow of Spanish rule, and 2) the 1960s Civil Rights, Women’s Rights, and anti-Vietnam War movements in the US compared and contrasted with Fidel Castro’s coming to power in Cuba. We experience these movements firsthand through visits to historic Philadelphia sites and through a 9-day trip to Cuba (7 days in the capital city, Havana, including at the University of Havana, and 2 days in historic Cienfuegos). This course gives RU students a unique opportunity to learn more about their own culture and to experience Cuba, a country only recently open for American visitors.
