International Student Housing Guide
For many international students, living off-campus is a convenient and affordable alternative to on-campus living. Before you make any major decisions about living off-campus, you should consider:
- Your budget or monthly price range
- The kind of housing you want, e.g. fully furnished, apartment
- How far away you live from campus
- Transportation in the neighborhood
- Whether you want a roommate or not
- What kinds of housing do you provide, and how much do they cost monthly?
- What length of lease(s) do you offer?
- When can I move in?
- How long does it take to get to campus from your property?
- How much will I need to pay for a rent deposit when I first move in?
- What utilities will I have to pay, and what is the average cost of utilities?
- What amenities does your property have?
- Do your rooms come with furniture?
- Is it in a safe neighborhood?
- Is there anything else I should know about your property?
Documents you MAY need to execute a lease
- Driver’s License, Passport, visa, or other proof of your identity
- Financial declaration (proof of income or bank statement)
- Bank account (to pay by check if applicable)
- Social Security Number
- Deposit and fees (security deposit, redecoration fee, application fee, pet fee, etc.)
Key Factors to Consider Before You Commit!
- DO NOT SIGN A LEASE OR AGREEMENT BEFORE SEEING AND INSPECTING THE PROPERTY! This means you should not sign a lease if you are currently out of the country or state.
