The Program
This course begins with a walking tour focused on women in Paris. The tour will introduce women in French history who have some sort of “presence” in Paris such as Heloise (Medieval woman buried at Pere Lachaise cemetery), Olympe de Gouge (French activists, 1700s, imprisoned at Conciergerie), Marie Antoinette (French queen, Versailles and buried at St Denis church), French artists such as Elisabeth Vigee-LeBrun (Versailles), Rosa Bonheur (Musee D’Orsay and Pere Lachaise), Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot (Musee D’Orsay), Camille Claudel (Musee Rodin), French singers Edith Piaf (Pere Lachaise) and Josephine Baker (Pantheon), French scientist Marie Curie (Pantheon), and French philosopher Simone de Beauvoir (Cafe Les Deux Magots). Students will grapple with the value of studying the lesser-known women in a world-famous city.
