The Program
The tradition of travelogue films extends back to over one hundred and thirty years. To the very beginning of filmmaking. Sharing and educating others about one’s travels is enriching for the traveler and the audience.
In Travelogue Filmmaking in Scotland, in class, the course will cover four areas: Scottish culture and history through narrative and documentary film, a history of the travelogue documentary, a primer in documentary filmmaking, and finally, the core of the course at home is studying John Lawson Stoddard and Burton Holmes’ writings and films as the premiere travelogists of the late 19th/early 20th century.
Students will watch and respond, in written film responses, to a number of important Scottish film productions that capture and speak to Scottish history, culture, political, and art. They will study the written and filmic work of Stoddard and Holmes on their extensive travels in Scotland, and will take particular notes for a comparative study in of how they capture Scotland’s visual and cultural changes 130 years later.
Students will read a number of written travelogues and respond, not critically, but from an emotional and entertainment perspective as to how they were effected by the travelogue, and its effectiveness as a work to educate and stimulate travel to the places being described.
