This course introduces students to South African Constitutional Law. The course begins with an introduction to the history of South Africa (as it relates to the development of the country’s Constitution) and to the jurisprudence of the country’s Constitutional Court. The course narrows in on the theme of health and human rights. Over spring break the class travels as a group to South Africa to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing the country and of the ways in which the country’s Constitution is shaping its response to those challenges.

We will meet a Justice of the South African Constitutional Court, and students and professors from the law school at the University of Cape Town. We’ll explore the top of Table Mountain, visit the Apartheid Museum, spend a day in wine country, experience a Township tour, go on safari and more!
